He looks at the clock,
there's no time for breakfast.
A shower, black coffee, and his favorite CD.
The sun's in his eyes on the highway,
still sore from yesterday's 7th defeat. (Go Bills)
Lunchtime spent looking for something to care about,
someone to pull at the lines on his face.
He remembers a girl once who sharpened his senses,
but left without saying goodbye in the end.
On a sidewalk,
on a street in any city,
two people talk, and the morning's not so shitty.
She wakes from a dream, cracks an egg on the stove
with some music to remind her of home.
Her brothers and sisters call every so often to ask
"How ya doin'? Do you still feel alone?"
and the answer is always "No",
and the answer will always be "No",
but they'll never know.
On a subway train,
on a couch in your parents' basement,
four empty shoes with untied laces.
A box of belongings.
A black marker scribble.
"It's true what they said about him."
"Always a quitter, always last place, it's good you got away when you did."
